What you think about talent is probably wrong
“The trouble with Asia is that the talent is not nearly as good as it is in the West”.
It was a throwaway comment by someone I didn’t know very well. But it made me angry.
At the time, I was entering my 15th year working in Asia. I had trained well over 10,000 managers, either personally or via engage, the company I founded with Opporta’s Chairman, Mike Anthony. Most of these managers were Asian. Most of these people seemed talented and certainly none appeared to be in any way lesser than their counterparts anywhere else.
As far as I knew, the person I was speaking with had little or no experience of working with Asians, but she was the CEO of an influential company in the marketing space. Her opinion, right or wrong, was likely to influence a wide network of managers, many of whom might mistake her statement for proven fact.
Turning dreams into reality
Very few people are fortunate enough to work with a company that takes the time to measure their strengths and weaknesses. Most of us are left to figure out this on our own. How then can we tell if we’re any good at what we do?
Our research indicates that most company employees:
- Don’t get enough training
- Don’t receive enough guidance on their strengths and weaknesses
- Don’t receive sufficient guidance on how to improve
What this means is that a very large number of people are wandering through their working life rudderless. If you don’t know how good you are at something, how can you improve? If you don’t know how good you are at something, how can you assess the roles in life you are best suited for? If you don’t know how good you are how can you take control of your career and create your own future?
